Our History

Success from Day One

When LJMU first entered Formula Student, in 2009-2010, the team set the record for the best ever finish for a first year team, placing 21st overall. Back then, the team were known simply as ‘LJMU Racing Team’ and the cars utilised internal combustion engines.

The team then travelled to Germany for the 2010-2011 season, where we placed 38th overall. That same year, in the UK event we placed 18th overall, and were the 4th best UK team.

For the 2011-2012 season, the success really started rolling in. In the UK competition the team placed 12th, as the 2nd best UK team, and when the team travelled to the Spain competition we placed 6th overall, and claimed our first category win in the skid pad event.

Other early team highlights include placing 2nd in the special cost task at Germany 2013, ranking the top UK-based team at Spain 2014, and ranking the 4th best UK team at the Silverstone event.

Turning Electric

In 2017 the team underwent a huge change, as we switched our focus from combustion engine-powered cars to electric cars. Newly rebranded as LJMU e-Racing Team, the team were early adoptees of the EV car, and entered first a Class 2 entry in 2018, finishing 5th overall as the 2nd best UK university.

The 2020 competition was modified due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the competition went online, with teams competing virtually using lap time simulations and simulations of the real Silverstone track.

It was during this online event where LJMU e-Racing won the Asseto Corsa Endurance event.
